Requirement.

John Lewis had a very successful on device demo running across the computing department, but with the launch of the new Microsoft Windows, it was time for a change.  Microsoft had offered John Lewis the default Windows retail demo for free, but despite having some great features it did not convey the John Lewis brand.  A partnership was suggested between Microsoft and an agency to create a demo that combined the best of Microsoft in the voice of John Lewis.

Deliverable.

A deceptively simple interface hides complex customisation rules and customer sell-up features.  The “metro” style interface allows each PC to have a tailored interface.  For instance a business PC would have a different configuration of tiles to a gaming PC.  PC segments have their own colour scheme to appeal to particular customer types.

Content is also tailored with time sensitive promotions and manufacturer relevant adverts. All the customization is automatic and is achieved without any interaction from the JLP partners, hiding the complexity from the store assistant giving them more time for sales. The demo is optimised for touch screen and utilises intuitive swipe and tap gestures. This allows natural and intuitive navigation to a wealth of information.

The app utilises Microsofts RDX demo platform and is distributed through the Microsoft Store.

Involvement.

Creating an interface that was fully expandable, configurable and future proof was a challenge.  Taking inspiration from Microsoft’s Metro UI made a great building block on which to build. Liaising between stakeholders was key to a successful, timely delivery.  Reassuring all parties with sketches and prototypes that a simple approach was best, ensuring customers would always be within two clicks of purchasing information.

Forward UI planning and templating has proved its worth during multiple quarterly updates.  Each quarterly update has had its own requirement for new content, but has slotted into place without the need for redesign.

This app has since been acclaimed as being ‘best-in-class’ by some of the biggest names in consumer electronics and has received a great reaction from the marketing teams at John Lewis, as well as partners and customers.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Paul for the last two years on a key strategic retail demo project. Paul, is diligent, detail orientated and communicative which makes him extremely easy to work with. He has a fantastic ability to manage a project with a number of key deliverables without fuss or spectacle. Linked to this, is his ability to co-ordinate a number of key stakeholders behind one strategic goal, taking into account differing aims and requirements. Paul has been instrumental in the success of our project and I have no doubt he will continue to be a valued partner in its innovation moving forward”
John Crouch – Channel Marketing Manager

“I’ve worked with Paul on a number of updates for the John Lewis customer demo. Paul is an asset to the CE team, showing attention to technical detail, but also keeping communication clear and understandable, resulting in the best experience for customers. Sensitive to the fast changing nature of technology buying, Paul demonstrates strong timeline management, ensuring a quality customer experience is delivered to store on time. Always anticipating both our, and our customers needs, Paul’s easy and natural style makes him a pleasure to work with.”
Phil Harrison – Buyer for Tablets and Computing at John Lewis
